A once-in-a-millennium Arctic totality over the frozen Bering Strait.
On March 30, 2033, the Moon's umbra crosses from the Russian Far East — Provideniya, Anadyr, Uelen — over the Bering Strait into western Alaska, with Nome essentially on the centerline, then up through Kotzebue to Utqiaġvik (Barrow). Maximum totality is 2 minutes 37 seconds, with the Sun only 11° above the horizon. Sometimes called the 'Great Bering Strait Eclipse,' it strikes the high Arctic at such a glancing angle that the umbra spreads to about 780 km wide.

Nome sits directly on the centerline and is reachable, with totality lasting about 2m28s at roughly 9:46 a.m. local time. Logistics are the real challenge: Nome has only ~3,000 residents and limited hotels, and the Iditarod sled-dog race finishes there in mid-to-late March. Communities such as Unalakleet, Koyuk, Emmonak, Teller, Wales, Diomede and Shishmaref also lie in or near the path.

Alaska's next total eclipse after this is not until 2097 (over Denali). For many western Alaska communities this is a once-in-many-generations event — and for Utqiaġvik, a state climatologist notes it is the community's only total eclipse in a roughly 1,000-year window. Counterintuitively, late March in western Alaska is the sunniest part of the state at the sunniest time of year, giving better-than-expected sky odds.
A late-winter, snow-and-sea-ice eclipse: the black Sun hanging low over a frozen white Arctic and the ice-choked Bering Strait, the low Sun angle making it a true horizon spectacle. Aurora is even conceivable in the darkened sky.
Across the Inuit world — Alaska, Canada, Greenland — the Sun and Moon are siblings locked in an eternal sky-chase. The Sun is a sister, Malina (or Siqiniq); the Moon her brother, Aningan (or Igaluk). After a taboo violation she flees into the sky with a torch to become the radiant Sun; her brother pursues as the dimmer Moon, his face smudged with soot (the lunar markings), thinning as he forgets to eat (the lunar phases). When he finally catches her, their brief union causes a solar eclipse. The myth was recorded by Hinrich Rink in 1875 and Knud Rasmussen in the 1920s; one tradition holds that men should stay indoors during a solar eclipse, and women during a lunar eclipse.
